Acoustic Pedestrian Signal

The Accessible Pedestrian System is an audible and vibrating pedestrian signal system designed to make street crossing safer for individuals who are blind, deaf, hard of hearing, or who have low vision. The system consists of a pushbutton unit which creates audible and tactile walk and don't walk signals. A 1Hz pulse is used for ‘don’t walk’ (red) and 10Hz pulse mechanical sound is used for ‘walk’(green). It also contains pushbutton locator tone and speaker . A noise controlled volume is also available. Using RFID technology, an electronic key can activate specific features. Holding the electronic key to the pushbutton activates an extended walk time. Direction arrow in the upper lid that points out the exact walking direction and the vibrator underneath it provides information to people with impaired hearing. A tactile map on the side of the pedestrian signal describes a zebra crossing to a person with impaired vision.
